Roanoke & Lynchburg Area Cooling Shelters Provide Relief During Heat Wave

The following locations in Lynchburg will serve as cooling centers with bottled water provided by the Lynchburg Fire Department:

Salvation Army, located at 2215 Park Ave., from 12 p.m. to 5 p.m. Wednesday-Friday.

The Refuge on Memorial, located at 2220 Memorial Ave., from 8 a.m. to 6 p.m. Wednesday-Friday.

On the Southside, anyone needing to cool down can visit the Temporary Relief and Counseling Center at the Redemption Center Church at 625 Shelton Street in Danville. That will operate from 10 a.m. to 6 p.m. For more information, call the center at 434-710-6126. Additional information about other cooling centers in the area can be obtained by calling 211.

Those in the Martinsville area can visit the Martinsville-Henry County YMCA at 3 Starling Avenue from 5:30 a.m. to 9 p.m. Monday through Friday; 7 a.m. to 5 p.m. on Saturday; and 1 to 5 p.m. on Sunday.

In Roanoke, a number of libraries are operating as cooling centers, including Belmont, Gainsboro, Melrose, Raleigh Court, Williamson and Main Branch. The following locations in the city will offer cooling centers and free water this holiday weekend, while Roanoke Public Libraries are closed:

Friday, July 3:

  • The Rescue Mission, 402 4th St. SE, normal business hours
  • Market on Melrose, 2502 Melrose Ave. NW, Suite A, 8 a.m. – 8 p.m.

Free Water Available:

  • Third Street Station, 325 Salem Ave. SW, normal business hours
  • Freedom Festival, River’s Edge Park on Reserve Avenue, 4 p.m. – 10 p.m.
  • Roanoke Police Officers on patrol

Saturday, July 4:

Cooling Centers:

  • The Rescue Mission, 402 4th St. SE, normal business hours
  • Market on Melrose, 2502 Melrose Ave. NW, Suite A, 10 a.m. – 7 p.m.

Free Water Available:

  • The Hope Center, 510 11th St. NW, normal business hours
  • Roanoke Police Officers on patrol

Sunday, July 5:
