A missing 20-year-old midshipman from New Jersey has been found dead near the U.S. Naval Academy, per the Washington Post.
On Sunday (October 12), U.S. Naval Academy officials confirmed that the body of Kyle Philbert James, 20, was found near the school. James' cause of death hasn't been determined, and an investigation remains ongoing.
“It is painful to lose a member of our Naval Academy family, and as we attempt to better understand this tremendous loss, we offer our deepest condolences to Philbert James’ family, close friends, classmates, and company mates during this extremely difficult time,” the Naval Academy said in a written statement.
James’ mother, Maria, told WFSB-TV that she last exchanged text messages with her son at 6:30 a.m. on Thursday (October 9). Later that day, at around 5 p.m., the academy contacted her to report that James had missed all his classes and had been reported missing.
James' family said they are still searching for answers from the school about what happened to their son. The midshipman was a history major, a member of the academy’s 36th Company, and was also active in the school’s gospel choir.
James' death marks the second serious incident near the academy in recent weeks. In September, a midshipman and a Navy police officer were injured in a shooting following a false active shooter report on campus.
