A Black man was pulled over, handcuffed, and held in a police car while officers searched his Bentley for drugs or weapons to no avail.
The encounter between police in Dayton, Ohio and Paris Boyd, the driver, unfolded on July 31. Video shows multiple officers searching Boyd’s car for about 45 minutes, using of a police K-9, before issuing a citation for illegal window tint.
“I checked every compartment I can think of,” one officer said, to which another cop responded, “Right car, wrong day.”
In the video, Boyd was driving slowly past a patrol car when he was pulled over by police.
“Why are you so slow?” an officer asked him before ordering Boyd out of the vehicle.
“Turn around, face the car, put your hands behind your back,” the cop continued, to which Boyd complied and asked, “What’d I do?”
Police declined to explain the stop before handcuffing Boyd, who said he had no drugs or weapons. An officer searched the vehicle with a K-9 unit, opening compartments and rummaging through the car without a warrant.
Video of incident shows one officer admitting to profiling Boyd.
“He drove by like 30 minutes earlier. What the hell is a Bentley doing over here?" the officer said.
After finding no contraband, officers measured Boyd’s window tints and issued a citation for illegal tinting. Boyd was later fined in court for the violation.
Boyd paid $387.50 to obtain police footage of the incident, which he shared on social media.
“You have committed the crime of Driving While Black,” one commenter said.
